The Bay of Torre dell’Orso: Where Water, Pine Forest and Legend Meet
There are places you recognise before you’ve ever seen them. Torre dell’Orso is one of those. A bay where the water runs turquoise almost impossibly transparent and the sand stretches pale and fine, nearly white in the brightest light. Offshore, two sea stacks rise in perfect silence, identical in form, as if standing watch over something ancient and unspoken.Behind the beach, a pine forest marks the boundary between land and sea. Its presence is quiet but unwavering: the scent of resin and wild Mediterranean herbs drifts in with the salt air, forming a fragrance that belongs entirely to this place. Torre dell’Orso lies along the Adriatic coast of Salento, in the municipality of Melendugno and it is one of the most beloved and distinctive stretches of shoreline on the entire Salento peninsula.
The Pine Forest of Torre dell’Orso
Beyond the beach, a pine forest of roughly 60 hectares unfolds across the landscape dense with vegetation typical of the Mediterranean maquis. The scent of the pines mingles with the salt carried in on the waves, creating an atmosphere of instinctive, unhurried wellbeing. This is a destination in its own right, not merely a path to the sea.In spring, the forest invites long, unhurried walks. In summer, it offers cool shade and the kind of quiet that feels increasingly rare. Those who wander through it find themselves slowing down listening, breathing, simply being.
A Blue Flag Sea
Torre dell’Orso is part of the stretch of coast awarded the Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) an international recognition given to beaches that meet rigorous standards for water quality, cleanliness, safety and services. It speaks to the dedication of those who live and work on this coastline, year after year. For visitors, it translates into something beautifully simple: water so clear you can see the sand shifting beneath it, safe for swimming, welcoming without reservation.

The Legend of the Two Sisters
The legend of the Two Sisters, drawn from “Il libro degli altri. Storie e leggende del Salento magico e misterioso” by Antonio Nahi (translation from the original Italian text)
Once, not far from Torre dell’Orso, in the countryside that stretches between olive groves and dry-stone walls, there lived two sisters. Both were gifted with a rare and luminous beauty, and both carried in them a simplicity that made them all the more captivating. One summer’s day, when the heat of the inland fields had become unbearable, they set off in search of coolness walking through the fragrant pine forest, following the scent of the sea. They reached the high cliff and stopped. Below them, the water shimmered and trembled under the morning sun, and a light breeze carried with it the smell of pine, myrtle and rosemary. For one of the sisters, the sight proved overwhelming magnetic, almost hypnotic. As if seized by an ecstasy she could not contain, she opened her arms wide and, with a cry that seemed to ring with joy, leapt into the sea below. The other sister, terrified, did not hesitate. She threw herself after her hoping, in a single desperate gesture, to save her.The white foam on the surface of the water did not last long. An old fisherman, drawn to the shore by the sound of their cries, found no trace of them. Only two towering rock stacks stood where the sea met the cliff side by side, perfectly alike. He had never seen them before. Shaken to his core, he gave that place a name: The Two Sisters.
